Our Island Has a Role to Play

The Deputy Chief Minister has told Tynwald that while the Isle of Man has no military or diplomats, it does not mean we can’t play our role on the international stage by adding a Manx voice to those opposing the actions of the Russian regime.
Jane Poole-Wilson was standing in for Chief Minister Alf Cannan who is not present in the Chamber for today’s sitting.
The Justice and Home Affairs Minister outlined the steps already taken on island, as part of our international obligations, which has included the removal of planes, helicopters and yachts from the island’s registers and the thousands of pounds raised by the Manx people to donate to those fleeing their homes in Ukraine.
The Motion reads: ‘That Tynwald supports Ukrainian sovereignty, democracy, independence and territorial integrity; condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine; is committed to fully supporting international sanctions against Russia; and further supports the protection of refugees and humanitarian relief in Ukraine.’
Refugees
Mrs Poole-Wilson told members that while the island is working with the UK to allow refugees to travel to the island, the gov is also working to explore working with others and to ‘avoid being tied up in bureaucracy’.
She added that over 260 responses had been received since the gov asked islanders to register their willingness and ability to welcome refugees into their homes or properties.
The debate is continuing and we will update on this throughout the afternoon.
