Over 950 Jobs Left Unfilled

The latest unemployment figures show a slight drop in the number of people registered as looking for work.

However, there is a bigger concern in the number of posts that remained unfilled at the end of February.

February saw unemployment drop by 12 from the previous month (January 2022), down to 297, and has decreased by 525 persons compared to the same month last year (February 2021).  This amounts to an unemployment rate of 0.7%.

The International Labour Organisation places estimates a figure of 742 people who were unemployed and looking for work in February 2022 compared with 754 in January. This amounts to an unemployment rate of 1.7%.

Who Fills These Jobs?

While these figures are broadly positive, there is an issue of the number of roles going unfilled. There were 1,090 vacancies notified to the Job centre in February 2022, which is an increase of 147 compared to the previous month. And, at the end of the month, 961 remained. Of these, 53% (510) were full time positions and 47% (451) were part time. 

Of these unfilled roles, 227 are in catering and entertainment, 129 in the tourist sector, 112 in medical and health services, 75 were in retail and 42 in teaching and education. A further 90 were in ‘other business services’.
