A Function Room, Not a Bar

Onchan Park will not be gaining a bar, rather the intended space is for a function room.

We reported yesterday that Onchan District Commissioners had submitted two applications which pointed towards a bar in the park, including one with a canopy sign saying ‘Ocean Bar’.

However, we have since been contacted by John Kinley, owner of the Ocean Views Restaurant who clarified that it is not a bar, but a fully licensed function room intended for events such as christenings, birthdays, work events and  wakes private meeting room.

Mr Kinley said: ‘We had people last year asking if we could host functions but if half the room is having a wake and the other half a Christmas party it would be difficult.’

The functions room would therefore allow the restaurant to operate upstairs while allowing for private functions downstairs in what was formerly the arcade.

Mr Kinley said that the plans have been approved by the Licensing Court and, pending planning, hopes to have the room open for the winter, with space for between 60 and 70 people.

Neither, as we also reported, will the function room be extending onto the pavement outside the building, rather the canopy, if approved, would be what is extending out from the building with signage allowing potential customer to be able to see where the function room is.
