Petition

Laxey Beach Stop Cafe has today handed in its petition for continued use of the public shelter on Laxey prom.

Garff Commissioners has said it intends to install lockers and showers in the shelter on the village’s prom.

However, just under 6,000 people signed a petition calling on the authority to keep the shelter as it is, with seating supplied and maintained by the cafe. The petition was handed in today by director Dalia Everden.

Book Club

Are you an avid reader of Manx history and/or historic fiction (set anywhere)? If so, you might want to join the new Rushen Heritage Book Club! The club’s plan is to meet one evening a month, at Rushen Heritage Centre (Bridson Street, Port Erin) and discuss chosen books over a cuppa.

It will be informal and relaxed – all about sharing a love of books and heritage, to chat with (new) friends and find new authors/books that you may not have known about. Port Erin’s Dog Sh*t

At its meeting in July, Port Erin Commissioners reviewed the costs and benefits in providing dog gloves (dog poo bags) throughout the village. With an annual cost of around £2,500 per year, the board was said to be disappointed that there had not been a marked improvement in dog faeces being picked up around the village.

The Board agreed to monitor the situation and costs over the next 12 months and unless a significant improvement is seen, the provision of dog poo bags around the village may be removed.

Chair of Port Erin Commissioners Godfrey Egee said: ‘The Board has provided the dog glove dispensers around the village which are there for those who may require an extra glove on occasion. Dog walkers should really not be leaving home without their own provision for picking up after their dog. We have received reported of users taking many, many bags which is certainly not the intended use. We would reiterate that all dog walkers ensure they pickup after their dogs and dispose of the waste in any waste bin, or the wheelie bin at home.’

New Editor

Business 365 magazine returns in September with a new look and a new editor who will be familiar to many of our readers. Experienced Isle of Man journalist Paul Speller will succeed Simon Richardson at the helm of 365, with Simon standing down after 22 years as managing editor.

Simon, a former news editor at Manx Radio, editor of the Manx Independent newspaper and business editor at the Isle of Man Examiner, will focus on his freelance work on and off the island. However, he is not leaving Business 365 entirely – he will have his own column in the new publication.

Paul, who had a brief spell as an intern at Gef, said: ‘In many ways this is the ideal time for a relaunch of the magazine. In addition to the challenges of recent years – both in business and more widely – there are more ahead.’
