Gov Split Over Pool Proposals

Two gov departments supported different recommendations over the future of the island’s regional pools.

The report into the future of regional sports hubs has been published today.

Alongside the options and implications for the pools and wider community, the report shows outlines what was the preferred options of the DoI and DESC.

The report was commissioned after Tynwald said the two departments should ‘produce a docketed long term strategic plan to develop regional sports hubs as part of a newly branded offer’. This was also to consider options for how local authority and DESC involvement should be organised.

For his part, DoI Minister Tim Crookall said that he supported the recommendation that the regional pools should be moved to the DESC and for the department and Minister Julie Edge to determine how best to manage the regional pools and to make decisions around closing a pool or to seek additional funds.

However, while the DESC claimed to be in support of this, it recommended a totally different course of action as it ‘does not have the necessary funding’ to go down the other route.

It adds: ‘Whilst it is noted that option 3b (i) does not support the delivery aim in creating Regional Sports Hubs across the island, it is clear following the detailed work undertaken, that DESC does not hold sufficient budget to sustain current delivery.’

As such, the DESC support option is that the southern pool be closed and the funding that can be saved be used to support the north and west pools, with their respective boards receiving an increase in subvention in line with the energy costs previously underwritten by Treasury.

It added: ‘The strategy to deliver sport and youth provision across the Island will continue to provide a range of opportunities and activities for children and young people which are already laid out in the Strategy for Sport and Youth Services Strategy, irrespective of the outcome of the creation of Regional Sports Hubs.’
