The DoI says it has received a ‘first draft’ of a report into the island’s railways.

SYSTRA was due to complete its review by the end of September.

The consultants were appointed earlier this year to carry out an independent review and economic impact assessment of the island’s vintage rail network including the Steam Railway, Manx Electric Railway, Snaefell Mountain Railway and Douglas Bay Horse Tramway.

A DoI spokesperson said: ‘The department has been provided with a first draft of the report while SYSTRA finalise the contents. The department is expecting the report to be provided within a fortnight, and will publish the report as soon as reasonably practical.’

Gef understands that one of the options that could come from the final report is the MER operating as a single track line from Laxey to Ramsey, but when we put this to the DoI, the department didn’t respond to that specific request for a response.
