Plan to Extend Ukraine Scheme

In recent months, there has been a significant decrease in the number of Ukrainians travelling to the Isle of Man under the Isle of Man Homes for Ukraine Scheme.
Undoubtedly a move which showed the island at its best, people have opened their homes to people and families fleeing the war.
However, while support for this remains strong, it has been found that number of hosts are unsure of their future commitments.
Under the new measures, there would by a maximum amount that can be paid to hosts of £4,320, doubling the monthly payment from £240 to £480 to those who’ve had Ukrainians staying with them for at least six months.
The scheme will now be closed on March 31 2024.
In the explanatory notes for the Tynwald order, it is explained: ‘To incentivise hosts to continue hosting beyond the minimum six-month period, the amount payable to hosts for months six to 12 has been increased to bring these payments closer to the amounts paid in other jurisdictions.
‘The strength of the Ukrainian community on the island and the resources that have been created means there is a high level of support and advice available for new arrivals and those settling into island life.’
Treasury concurrence has been given to the carry forward of funding of £177,842 from funds previously allocated to the Ukraine Support team in the 2022/2023 financial year. It is believed that this amount will be sufficient to fund the additional cost of the Scheme.
