A petition to save and protect the southern swimming pool has reached almost 500 signatures in its first morning.
Alice Hartley has started the petition after the Southern Swimming Pool board confirmed the gov wants to close the pool ‘purely on financial grounds’.
Since the announcement from the board, it has called on the southern MHKs to rally and help protect it, while parents of children who attend clubs and school swimming there have decried the potential loss of the south’s only public pool.
Alice said: ‘The pool is a critical facility in the south of the island, please help us save the pool and show your support in keeping a pool in our community.’
Of those who have signed the petition, Debbie Wignall said it the pool is a ‘vital part of the southern community’, Susan Pearson described it as a ‘lifeline for many people’, while others noted that it not only provides an area for people to exercise and said it was important that children are given a space to swim.

A decision on the pool is believed to be due to go to Tynwald in February.
