‘Shotgun’ Post in Online Poll Reported to Police
‘How does anyone think this is acceptable?’
An MHK has reported an online post which suggested she could be removed from office with a ‘shotgun’ to police.
The comment appeared in a survey posted in a Facebook group set up to oppose plans for new 20mph speed limits in residential areas around the island.
Infrastructure Minister Michelle Haywood said she had no issue with people campaigning for her removal, but questioned whether threats of violence crossed the line.
She wrote: ‘It’s fine to start up a petition to have me sacked. Free speech and all that. But is it ok to suggest that MHKs should be removed with a shotgun?
‘How does anyone think this is acceptable?
‘It’s much less funny than the Airport April Fools story.
‘It has been reported to the police.’
The poll has since been removed from the group.
In response, fellow MHK Rob Callister condemned the post and apologised to Dr Haywood for any distress caused.
He said: ‘If this allegation is true, it is wholly unacceptable on every level.
‘I would like to take this opportunity to unequivocally condemn any personal attacks directed at any Government Minister or MHK, particularly those that occur within a Facebook group and involve threats or weapons.
‘Such behaviour is entirely inappropriate, and I sincerely apologise to the DOI Minister for any distress it may have caused. Those responsible must face the full consequences of the law.’
Mr Callister added that his involvement in the group was focused on representing constituents concerned about the lack of consultation over the speed limit plans.
