Tynwald Likely to Sit in September

Chief Minister Alf Cannan says he intends to announce what support the gov will offer islanders next Thursday, as the cost of living crisis continues to bite.

Following a meeting of CoMin today, Mr Cannan said ministers will meet again next week.

As fuel bills rise and inflation climbs, many islanders are facing a difficult winter, as highlighted by several Gef readers over the last two days.

Commenting following a meeting of the CoMin and behind closed door discussions with Tynwald members earlier today, Alf Cannan said: ‘I want to reassure the public and the business community that Government is aware of the anxiety many are experiencing over the rising cost of living, especially concerns around energy price increases due this winter.

‘Government is making good progress on finalising a package of measures to support our people through the winter months and into 2023.  There is however more work to be done. The Council of Ministers will meet again on Monday August 22 and I hope to announce our winter support package on Thursday August 25.’

Mr Cannan has also written to Tynwald President Laurence Skelly to request a sitting of Tynwald, something called for by Gef and several backbench MHKs, be called for Tuesday September 13.

Last Week

Last week saw the gov announce support totalling £2.8m designed to cushion those most vulnerable to the rising cost of living. 

Around 3,500 households will benefit from an Energy Support Payment in October, which comes in addition to the payment already made in April this year. Those who currently receive income support, income based jobseekers allowance or employed person’s allowance (EPA), who are responsible for housing costs will receive £300. 

The 6,000 families who receive Child Benefit will be automatically issued with an additional Family Support Payment during November of up to £300 for those with one child and with increased payments for larger families.
