We Try Not to Scare Horses

DoI Minister Chris Thomas says he is sorry if the island’s steam railway scares any horses.
He was quizzed on this matter during this week’s Keys sitting by Jason Moorhouse (Arbory, Castletown and Malew)
Having confirmed that steam trains are limited to a 25mph speed limit and there are rules around when whistles can be used, Mr Thomas was asked about whistlers that may startle some horses.
He replied: ‘It’s very unfortunate if there was any incident involving a horse or any other piece of livestock involving a steam train whistle and I can only apologise for that. It might be interesting to find out the circumstances in which people who have vulnerable horses look after them in respect of putting them close to places where steam train whistles are whistled if that’s going to be something that’s going to make a difference for them.’
Having detailed the rulebook used by train drivers, Mr Thomas added that he was looking forward to getting his own copy, ‘now I’m properly the fat controller’.
