Cav Says Goodbye
Alexander Vinokourov is hopeful Cav will change his mind
Mark Cavendish’s team says the Manx Missile will head home today after crashing out of the Tour de France.
The greatest sprinter in the history of cycling, Cav has previously said this will be his last year as a pro.
Having crashed 60km from the finish of stage eight, a 200.7km run from Libourne to Limoges, Cav broke his collarbone.
The Astana Qazaqstan Team said a ostesynthesis screw in the acromioclavicular joint, which was put in after his crash in 2017 Tour de France, had been loosened.
After leaving hospital on Saturday, Cav visited the team hotel to say goodbye to his teammates, the team said: ‘A very fast recovery, good luck, thank you for the great moments and see you soon, Mark!’

One More Year?
While Cav has stated (and restated) he will retire this year, Astana team boss Alexander Vinokourov has said: ‘We want to give Mark Cavendish the possibility to ride for one more year, but it’s up to him. We’d love to see him ride in 2024, start his 15th Tour de France and win his 35th stage.’
