Cav: This Season is my Last

Manx Missile Mark Cavendish says this season will be his last as a pro cyclist.

Arguably the island’s greatest ever sportsman, Cav put the Isle of Man on the cycling map after he exploded onto the scene in 2005.

Turning 38 yesterday, Cav will have one last go at making even more history this year when he enters the Tour de France as part of the Astana Qazaqstan Team.

Announcing his retirement today, Cav said: ‘I’ve absolutely loved racing every kilometre of this race so far, so I feel it’s the perfect time to say it’s my final Giro d’Italia and 2023 will be my final season as a professional cyclist.’

Having gone from training around the NSC, Cav has won Commonwealth gold, been a world champion, equalled Eddy Merckx’s record for the most number of Tour de France stage wins, which saw him roll back the years to inspire yet another generation of potential future sports stars.
