Football Writers’ Awards
Peel and Corinthians scooped the top two prizes
With the 2022/23 football season fading into the distance like a Peel sunset, the Football Writers’ Awards were held this week.
With winners picked by the island’s top panel of self-appointed experts, the awards celebrate another brilliant season of the world’s most exciting and sometimes bizarre league.
Danny Gerrard won player of the year after his impressive season the engine room at Corinthians that has seen him in the running for a role with FC Isle of Man.
After ending Peel’s 21-year wait for a league title, a win which sparked a pitch invasion nonetheless, Danny Bell won manager of the year.
Often the most overlooked role on a pitch, Stuart Morris won referee of the year after a solid season with the whistle that saw him take charge of several high profile games and the Manx FA Cup Final.
The other winner was St George’s Ben Wilkinson who scooped up both the goalkeeper of the year and young player of the year, the first time one player has won two awards which reflect his season between the sticks at Geordies in what has been the most challenging time in the club’s recent history. Sadly Ben wasn’t able to make it to the awards.
