What will July bring?
With TT23 now an iconic (if sometimes blurry) memory, June has come and gone and we head into July, here’s the top stories from Gef this month.
Sadly we do start with a tragic story as our most read article was the announcement of the death of Raul Torras Martinez. The Spanish racer died in the first Supertwin race on June 6 after a crash at Alpine. He was later given a fitting send off as hundreds of people gathered at the Grandstand to join his family on a last lap of the Course before his funeral in Douglas.
While Martinez’s death reminded us all of the dangers of the TT, visits by two serial TT winners to Hospice brought more than a manly tear to many eyes as John McGuiness and Peter Hickman visited avid fan Graham Whittaker. Hospice said that Hickman and McGuinness taking some time our of their schedules to meet Graham had meant the world to him. It also showed just what the TT is, it’s not just the world’s greatest road race, it’s a community that spans the globe.
A little over a year ago national treasure Charles Guard made a video called Welcome to the Isle of Man in which he highlighted the run down state of areas across Douglas. Anyone who saw it won’t forget his ‘OMG’ moment in a hurry. This year he returned with Welcome Back to the Isle of Man in which he looked at where some improvements had been made and criticised other areas that look awful. That second video has now been watched more than 23,000 times.
Must admit we didn’t expect this to be as big as it has been, but thousands of you read this story about two former employees of Beyond Habitat Ltd being awarded a combined £14,000 by employment tribunals.
Gary Skelding died working on a building site on August 4, 2020. This month his employer SCS tried and failed to have a £200,000 fine reduced by the Court of Appeal. A tragic case for everyone involved.
The final of our top six most read was another one that caught us by surprise, as the deal to sell Jacksons to a European car dealer grabbed the attention of our readers, beating the visit of Channing Tatum!
