While some sporting events were axed over the weekend, the hills around Turkeylands were alive with the sound of revving engines.

Just under 150 racers took to their bikes for Turkeylands MX’s practice meeting.

Set up in October 2021 by Dion Meechan, Martin Corkish and Gavin Hunt, the motocross club was created to ensure there was a place for young people to try or practice motorcycle riding.

The organisers said: ‘We are blown away by the support, 148 riders on track, 148 riders! Incredible entry! As for the day, well it doesn’t get much better, great track, great entry, great food and great atmosphere! We have heard for a few years that Motocross on the IOM is dying well 148 entries says different, the MX scene on the IOM is simmering and ready to explode.

‘Turkeylands was set up as a feeder to the the established MX clubs and we sincerely hope this is the case. This weekend the Isle of Man Schoolboy MX club is hosting a practice on Saturday and Race on Sunday. It’s a great club so please support it if you can, better still free entry for those who have never raced! We know it’s a sand track, we know its tough but we know its makes riders become way better all round riders, do it!’

The track is located near the Turkeylands Quarry, Ballasalla, close to the end of airfield at Ronaldsway airport.

If you missed last weekend and fancy seeing what the sport is about, or even just chatting to people involved, Isle of Man Schoolboy Club Motocross us holding its Club Round 4 and ACU Centre Round 4 Motocross meeting this weekend, September 17 and 18 at Ballagaraghan.
