Weekend Sports Preview
Netball, footy, rugby, athletics, motorsport, there’s loads to do!
This weekend’s Gef sports preview begins with a cap doth to two Manx squads in action off island.
The Isle of Man’s under-17 netballers have already begun their Europe Netball Challenge campaign in Northern Ireland, beating Gibraltar on Friday morning before facing a development side from the hosts this evening (Friday).
Further games follow against Switzerland on Saturday evening and the Republic of Ireland on Sunday lunchtime.
Joining the teenage netballers in flying the flag on far afield shores are a number of Manx athletes who are competing in the English National Cross-Country Championships in Cheshire on Saturday.
The National is an event that attracts thousands of entrants each year, and recent editions have seen upwards of 2,000 in the men’s race and more than 1,000 in the women’s.
There’s plenty of athletics on-island this weekend too, with the Murray Lambden Open meeting taking place at the NSC on Saturday.
The annual event features both reacewalking and road running and starts with junior events at 10am.
On Sunday, the Snaefell and Tholtans Fell Race takes place at 10am, the 9.5km event starting and finishing at the Bungalow.
There’s rugby and football on Saturday afternoon. There’s only a smattering of fixtures in the former, with Douglas and Vagabonds’ women’s team off island against Vale of Lune and Chester Devas respectively.
The one game on island sees Ramsey face Southern Nomads in the Manx Shield play-off final at Port-e-Chee. That game kicks off at 2.15pm.
In football, the second-tier’s premier cup competition takes centre stage with the four GH Corlett Woods Cup quarter-finals due to be played at 1.45pm.
Governor’s Athletic fface St Mary’s, RYCOB take on Gymns, Foxdale host Braddan and Michael United welcome Castletown to the west coast.
There’s a full slate of games in the Canada Life Premier League, plus the women’s and masters’ leagues resume on Sunday afternoon.
Finally, for all you motorsport fans, Ramsey MCC’s Paul Knight solo trial starts from Sulby Claddagh at 10am on Sunday morning.
