The northern section of the Mountain Road will be closed tomorrow for urgent maintenance after the police raised concerns over icy patches near Black Hut.

It will close between Barrule Park and the Bungalow from 9.30am until no later than 3.30pm.

The DoI said: ‘We will have a team undertaking works in the vicinity of “Casey’s” (just north of the Veranda/ Black Hut).

‘The team will seek to resolve the continuing issue of water running across the carriageway at this location. It was ice in this area that caused the Police particular concern when they closed the Mountain Road to traffic on Friday evening. The work being done is intended to counter the necessity of closing the road in the future due to this particular issue.’

The road from the Creg Ny Baa to the Bungalow and the Tholt Y Will Road will remain open to the public throughout.

Access to the Creg will be maintained from the Onchan end, Creg Back Road, Brandywell Road and Tholt Y Will.

The DoI added: ‘The works to be undertaken are intended to effect an immediate improvement. It is not yet known whether more extensive drainage work will be required beyond what can be achieved during this closure.

‘If this is the case this will be undertaken as programmed works at some other point in the future. There is no intention of extending tomorrow’s emergency closure beyond the times stated.’
