Over 125 Crashes in Five Years

There have been more than 127 crashes on the Mountain Road in the last five years, with the estimated bill to taxpayers being £1.7m.

Details have been published following an FoI request and don’t include damage only collisions.

That FoI revealed that since October 1 2018, there have been 127 collisions resulting in personal injury between Ramsey Hairpin and the junction of Johnny Wattersons Lane.

Of these crashes, 77 were categorised as slight in severity, 45 as serious and sadly five were fatal.

The total estimated cost of dealing with the collisions is £ 1,725,380.69.

Responding to the FoI, the DoI said: ‘The estimated costs of the injury collisions have been taken from the document ‘Reported Road Casualties Great Britain 2022’. Only those costs associated with the handling of the collision have been included, with any lost output and human related costs removed.’

It added: ‘The department does not record vehicle collisions that result in damage only. These collisions and any injury collisions not reported to the Police will result in further handling costs that are not included in the estimation above.’
