Steam Packet Protest Postponed due to Weather

A protest due to be held today in support of Steam Packet staff who were sacked just days before Christmas has been postponed due to the weather.
With the notice of terminations issued, the officers who have refused new conditions will cease to be employed in March.
The protest was due to be held at the traffic lights from 12pm opposite the Suntera Global offices.
Organisers had said: ‘The treatment and bullying of the staff over the past few months has been awful by senior management. We hope that many will come and show support for our Steam Packet staff who help keep the island a float.’
In an update, they told Gef that the protest had been postponed due to the ‘deterioration of the storm’. A new date will be arranged in the New Year.
The Steam Packet has said it ‘does not want to lose any of it officers but feels that the lack of progress on negotiations, or any genuine attempt to achieve a resolution from Nautilus has left it no choice but to take the least palatable option to resolving the ongoing dispute’.
The company added that it views its actions as ‘fair, legal and proportionate’ given the failure of negotiations between it and the Nautilus Union.
