1886 to Host Retro Daytime Disco
Disco to be made up of 80s, 90s, 00s choooons
Ever liked the idea of going on a night out for drinks and a dance but you hate club music, can’t be arsed with the hangover, and are too tired to leave the house after 4pm? I’m talking more about myself here. Well, something new is coming to the Island that could be perfect for you. (Me)
1886 is set to host a Daytime Disco. Yes, a disco that’s held DURING THE DAY. We’ll now be able to get smashed, shout at the DJ to play ABBA (whilst ABBA is already playing), be sick in the street with a kebab in-hand, and drunk dial our boss to enlighten them, while at their kid’s swimming comp, that they’re the worst person since Judas, ALL BY THE LIGHT OF DAY.
It’s a new trend that’s taken off in the UK, created by actress Vicky McClure (Line of Duty) and her husband Jonny Owen (Not Line of Duty). It’s basically a club night that’s open during the day and finishes early, meaning you get the best of both worlds of a fun club night and chilling out watching Saturday night television.
Resident DJ at 1886, Neil Cowie, is holding the island’s first afternoon disco, which is taking place this Saturday (13 April) in the cocktail lounge. And it’s only a fiver entry, which is an absolute bargain.
Neil says he had the idea himself a couple of years ago.
‘It is something I had in mind since lockdown and fancied doing,’ he said. ‘This isn’t new to the island as Toffs used to hold Saturday and Sunday events. But in modern times, this is the first one in the island.
‘I mentioned it a couple of years ago but there wasn’t much enthusiasm and I didn’t force the issue. But now it has become massively popular in the UK and we have decided to give it a go.’
It seems to be a wise decision as there has already been a big demand for tickets.
‘Ticket sales have been massively strong,’ Neil said. ‘We were just going to have tickets on the door but we had so many inquiries we decided to sell advanced tickets.
‘The capacity is 170 and we are well on our way to that before selling any tickets on the door.’
The discos run by Vicky McClure are targeted at an older crowd and are very retro, showing clips from old school TV shows and films as well as retro television adverts on big screens just like all the trendy, hipster places do now.
Neil says his event will generally cater to the over 25s but anyone aged 18+ can attend.
‘The event will go on from 1pm to 6pm and will have a bit if a girlie feel with plenty of prosecco. There will be music from the 80s, 90s and 00s and will be popular dance tunes. There will also be a food menu.
‘There is not a lot out there for people in their 40s and 50s who still want to go out and enjoy themselves. Hopefully, this will provide something for them.’
If the inaugural event goes well, Neil plans on holding them on a regular basis.
‘If it all goes well on the back of this first event,’ he said, ‘then I plan on holding them every four to six weeks. But I certainly want to do four or five of them at least.’
No longer will we have to worry about getting so drunk the night before that we end up collapsed in the hallway of our elderly parents house at 4am, ruining Sunday dinner because by midday we’re too busy breaking eye capillaries from heavy heaving into a bucket. (We’ve all been there, am I right?………..) Instead, we’ll be lovely and refreshed after collapsing into bed, head spinning, at the blissful time of 10pm.
Fancy a ticket? WHY WOULDN’T YOU? Get them here while they’re hot. They’ll also be available on the door.
