School’s 130th

A special anniversary will be taking place at one of the Isle of Man’s oldest schools. On October 10 Kewaigue School will have been serving its community for 130 years.

To mark the occasion, the current school community will be spending time reflecting on the school’s long history. Children have been researching what life was like back in 1892 and significant events during subsequent years.

A week of celebration will begin on Monday 10th October with a Victorian Day. This will be followed by an exhibition in the school hall of photographs and memorabilia and children’s work. Former pupils and staff of the school are invited to visit the school on Thursday October 13 between 3pm and 4.30pm or Friday between 1.30pm and 4.30pm.

Adrian Shorthouse, Kewaigue’s headteacher, said: ‘The children and staff have been busy preparing for the celebration with a view to appreciating the impact the school has had on generations of families and wider Island community. It is such a special place to learn and I hope visitors who have a connection with the school, come to see us to share their memories, see how the school has changed over the years and help us celebrate this wonderful school.’

Ballakermeen

Ballakermeen High School will welcome back all Year 10 students tomorrow (Wednesday September 28) after a contingency plan was put in place to ensure break times are safely supervised. This will continue up to at least October half-term. It also means Year 8 and 9 students will be able to attend more frequently.

St Ninian’s mean while has been able to find a way to bring all students back, until at least October half-term.

Santander

Santander International has signed a three-year sponsorship agreement with Manx Credit Union to support its work in providing savings, loans and financial education to people in the Isle of Man.

The sponsorship will help Manx Credit Union build capacity and extend its services to the community, particularly to those who struggle to access mainstream banking or who are less financially resilient. It has already enabled the credit union to move to bigger offices at Ragnall House in Peel Road, Douglas and increase the number of appointments for those seeking financial help.

David Talbot, Chair of Manx Credit Union, said the support from Santander International was very welcome, especially at a time when more people’s financial arrangements were coming under strain.  

‘We are anticipating a rise in demand for our services as the cost of living crisis continues to bite and the support from Santander International will enable us to see more people as well as expand our range of savings and loans products to the community.

‘We are very grateful to Santander International for providing this backing and enabling us to help the less financially advantaged members of our community as well as promoting personal financial responsibility more generally.’
