Comin: island can do more to help Ukraine

The gov is holding talks with ‘local stakeholders and organisations’ to see what more the island can do to provide humanitarian assistance to those afflicted by the Ukraine war.
Earlier this week, Chief Minister Alfred Cannan told the House of Keys the island was keen to play its part and would liaise with the UK Gov to see what it could do to help.
Comin has now issued a statement confirming that it discussed the war in Ukraine at it’s regular meeting yesterday and ‘determined that the Isle of Man should play its part in providing humanitarian assistance to those escaping from the Russian invasion’.
Mr Cannan said: ‘The Council of Ministers was unanimous in its view that we should be prepared to play our part in providing further support.
‘There will now be a period of engagement with the UK Government and others as to how this is best achieved.’
Cabinet Office Minister Kate Lord-Brennan will chair a Ukraine relief committee to assess options.
Yesterday, Comin also confirmed the £500,000 it had pledged to the Disasters Emergency Committee to go to its Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. That, too, was first announced by Mr Cannan on Tuesday, when he gave a statement to the Keys.
