Douglas North MHK David Ashford has written to Douglas Council urging them to re-think their bin collection policy.

The controversial decision by the Council to reduce bin collections down to fortnightly has split residents.

While the decision was, according to the Council, intended to increase recycling across the capital, residents have shared pictures of overflowing bins with Mr Ashford.

He said: ‘I’ve always believed in national politicians not interfering in matters that are purely for local authorities but it has become increasingly clear that the fortnightly waste collection is now having a major impact on Douglas constituents.

‘I have been contacted by people who are distressed, anxious, upset and even angry at the changes that are now more and more showing to be ill thought out and ill conceived. The implementation has been ill judged and the requirement for residents to undergo a waste audit should they require additional capacity smacks of “big brother” at best. It is also now as a result leaving some of our streets littered with rubbish and the waste services operatives who are on the front line taking the flak from the public when they themselves are suffering as a result of this policy.
