Referee Society’s Annual Awards
Sometimes the least appreciated, yet always the most vital, people to ensure football is played
The island’s Referee Society held its annual awards night this last week, celebrating a successful season for the officials.
Sometimes the least appreciated, yet always the most vital, people to ensure football is played, the island’s referring fraternity has seen numbers fall in recent years.
Held at Pulrose Golf Course, the awards saw referees at different stages of their careers recognised for the time and effort they put in week in and week out throughout the season.
Organised by secretary James Cherry, the awards were mostly presented by Championship assistant referee Paul Hodskinson, fresh from running the line at the Hospital Cup final.
Paul himself won the clubman award for the support given to a fellow referee who has had a difficult time in their personal life this year and asked for the society members to support his nomination for the Clubman award in memory of Doug Jones, which is voted for by society members.
The winners were:
L4 – Andy lodge
L5 – Dave Kelly
L6 – Rob Slinger
L7 – Janeann Doyle
Assistant Referee – Jack Maylin
Junior referee – Tom Halliwell
Most improved – Peter Greenhill (MLC)
