‘You Wouldn’t Ride Without a Helmet’

Public Health and Manx Care are bringing back their sexual health campaign for TT 2026, and the message is as blunt as it is simple: don’t take the risk.

Or as the slogan puts it: ‘You wouldn’t ride without a helmet… don’t take the risk. Wear a condom.’

The relaunch follows what officials say was a noticeable impact from last year’s campaign, which aimed to tackle rising demand for sexual health services after TT 2024.

Figures showed visits to the Manx Integrated Sexual Health Centre (MISH) increased by 217% in the weeks following TT 2024, while sexually transmitted infections rose by around 80% in the same period.

While last year’s awareness drive was linked to a drop in attendances compared to 2024 levels, MISH says there is still a longer-term trend of increasing STIs and unplanned pregnancies in the TT period.

Dr Matt Tyrer, Director of Public Health, said: ‘STIs have been a steady year on year increase since 2020. The Manx Integrated Sexual Health Centre reports a similar trend here.’

He warned that while many infections are treatable, they can become serious if not addressed.

‘Equally, unplanned pregnancies can change your whole life,’ he said. ‘Sexual health is an important topic although often difficult to talk about. We want to make sure that people know how to protect themselves.’

The campaign is aimed particularly at younger people and those enjoying the island’s busy nightlife during TT fortnight, when the population temporarily swells and judgement can sometimes be affected by alcohol or other substances.

Minister for the Cabinet Office David Ashford MBE MHK said safety during TT extends beyond the roads.

‘Enjoying TT safely also means understanding the importance of safer sex, particularly when alcohol or drugs may affect judgement, decision-making and consent,’ he said.

Free condoms will be available at key TT hotspots, including Bushy’s TT Village, where MISH will also be offering advice on 31 May and 1 June.

The campaign also promotes consent, regular testing, and looking out for friends on nights out, alongside a reminder that support is available at MISH in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
